Fundamental Movement Skills

End of Stage 2 (end of Year 4)


Description of Activity:

Students practise the fundamental movement skills of catching and overarm throwing. They then use these skills in a modified game of softball, teeball, baseball or cricket.

Suggested materials:

Tennis balls, catching mitts, bats

Prior Learning

Students have participated in a variety of physical activities. They have learnt a number of fundamental movement skills, such as the vertical jump, sprint run, hop and skip, and they have refined them through practice over time. The teacher has demonstrated the skills of catching and overarm throwing, and provided feedback on correct techniques to the students. Students have learnt the basic techniques involved and have practised and refined the skills, focusing on one component at a time.

Games and Sport (GSS2.8)
Participates and uses equipment in a variety of games and modified sports.
Moving (MOS2.4)
Displays a focus on quality movement in applying movement skills to a variety of familiar and new situations.

Criteria for Assessing Learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • demonstrate competence in catching and overarm throwing
  • transfer catching and overarm throwing skills to a modified game situation.
