Xiang has demonstrated a limited level of competence in creating, continuing and describing number patterns. A variety of simple patterns has been created but they are not all correct and some assistance has been provided. Only the first pattern has been described. To develop further, Xiang could experiment with more complex number patterns and explain them using mathematical language. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard midway through Stage 1.

The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.

    Students ask questions and use objects, diagrams and technology to explore mathematical problems. They link mathematical ideas and use everyday language, some mathematical language and diagrams to explain how answers were obtained.
  • Patterns and Algebra
    Students describe, create and continue a variety of number patterns and relate addition and subtraction facts to at least 20.
