Jules has demonstrated a high level of competence in using a range of artistic techniques to create a portrait. The penetrating gaze of the sitter creates audience engagement and conveys both appearance and personality. The brushwork shows technical proficiency in the delicate linework in the face and the window drapery. There is considered choice of contrasting colours to give definition to the foreground and background. The pensive mood of the sitter has been enhanced by the creation of an atmospheric space and a perceptive understanding of light on the subject and environment. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.

Grade A

The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.
