Selection and Use of Textiles

Description of activity

This activity relates to the selection and use of fibres, yarns and fabrics for textile projects, across all focus areas. Students are required to identify and describe a selection of fabrics that are appropriate for the end use of the textile item. Students will apply their knowledge of properties and performance to justify the fabrics that have been selected for use in their textile project.

Context

Students have a prior knowledge in identifying the performance criteria of textile items and linking these to end use. They have undertaken learning experiences in recognising and naming fabrics, yarns, fibres and their structures. Students can describe how fabric, yarn and fibre properties contribute to the performance of textile items.

Outcomes

5.5.1 critically selects and creatively manipulates a range of textile materials to produce quality textile items.
5.1.2 justifies the selection of textile materials for specific end uses.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to :

  • identify and describe a selection of fabrics that are appropriate for the end use of the textile item
  • describe the fibre, yarn and fabric properties
  • apply the knowledge of properties and performance to justify the selection of fabrics for the end use of the textile item.
