Roles in Physical Activity - Analysis and Reflection

Description of activity

Students will be organised into groups/teams. Within each group/team students adopt a role and perform the associated responsibilities throughout the unit. Alternatively students can rotate through a variety of roles. Examples of the roles to be filled include coach, trainer, referee/umpire, captain, publicity officer and team manager. To organise, administer and oversee the running of the season, students can also take roles on a selection panel, disputes panel and sports board. Students develop an understanding of the duties associated with their role(s). This can be done through duty cards, teacher presentation or personal research. The activity requires students to describe the responsibilities associated with their role, log the duties undertaken, perform their duties efficiently and reflect on their performance and the challenges they faced.

Context

In this unit students are involved in a simulated ‘season’ of physical activity. Students organise, administer and participate in a selected physical activity as they adopt one or more of the associated roles, eg coach, referee/umpire, captain, publicity officer. Students take responsibility for the success of the unit and enjoyment of others as they perform their allocated tasks. Throughout the unit students take time to reflect on their roles, evaluate their performances and make decisions on the degree to which the roles meet their needs and interests.

5.15 devises, justifies and implements plans that reflect a capacity to prioritise, think creatively and use resources effectively

5.16 predicts potential problems and develops, justifies and evaluates solutions.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • describe the duties associated with their role
  • maintain an accurate log of the duties undertaken
  • perform their duties efficiently
  • reflect on their performance in the role.
