Description of activity

Students will draw the graphs of the following equations. Students will describe the similarities and differences between the graphs.
y = x
y = x + 3
y = x - 3
y = 3x
y = 1/3x
Extension: Consider also the graphs of y = x3 and y = 3x.

Context

Patterns and Algebra, Working Mathematically

This assessment activity could be presented to students at the end of a unit on Coordinate Geometry, where students have been investigating the similarities and differences between linear relationships.

Determines the midpoint, length and gradient of an interval joining two points on the number plane and graphs linear and simple non-linear relationships from equations

Uses mathematical terminology and notation, algebraic symbols, diagrams, text and tables to explain mathematical ideas

Explains and verifies mathematical relationships

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • draw and label graphs of linear relationships
  • describe similarities and differences between graphs of linear relationships, using
    mathematical terminology.

  • Can you set up a table of values?
  • Can you sketch the graph for each set of values?
  • How do we label axes and graphs?
  • Can you sort the graphs/equations?
