Guidelines for marking

The following guidelines for marking show one approach to assigning a value to a student’s work. Other approaches may be used that better suit the reporting process of the school. Categories, marks, grades, visual representations or individual comments/notations may all be useful.

Range

Students in this range:

High

  • provide examples of problems, with valid diagrams, that could be solved using trigonometric ratios
  • use trigonometric ratios correctly to find the length of unknown sides and/or the size of unknown angles

Satisfactory

  • provide examples of problems, with valid diagrams, that could be solved using trigonometric ratios
  • label the sides and an acute angle of a right-angled triangle correctly, and expresses at least one trigonometric ratio in terms of the sides

Progressing

  • draw one valid right-angled triangle in which trigonometric ratios could be used to find the length of unknown sides and/or the size of unknown angles.

Feedback

Students will receive:

  • possible prompt questions related to the assessment Activity to assist their engagement
  • written feedback on individual responses to indicate evidence of understanding of each of the trigonometric ratios and their use in finding sides and angles in right-angled triangles
  • specific advice about strategies to further consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding, and suggestions for completing related additional tasks
  • oral feedback (to the class and individuals) related to the overall understanding of the concepts and misconceptions about the mathematical ideas.
