Doctor's Surgery Data Privacy Policy

Grade Work Samples
End of Stage 5 (end of Year 10)
Grade B Casey
Grade D Rania

Description of activity

Students will complete various group research activities to:

  • decide on a group definition of the terms 'morals' and 'ethics'
  • examine data privacy policies, and discuss their values and essential features.

Students will then individually create a multimedia presentation using either a webpage or slide presentation format containing each of the researched areas. Students must then devise a data privacy policy for a doctor's surgery. In the policy, they will need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the various database issues, as well as responsible practice and ethical use of information technology. The activity is expected to be completed over one week (including class and home research aspects), with assessment based on the presentation.

Context

This activity aims to assist students to develop an understanding of how legal and ethical issues relate to a real-life example. It takes place part-way through a unit of work that addresses the option Database Design. Students have identified the purpose of a database, the function of a database management system (DBMS) and have explored the issues that arise due to the use of a database. To prepare for this activity, students have researched and collected articles and case studies about policies to ensure privacy of data. These documents will be used to facilitate small-group discussion about the issues involved in the use, maintenance and development of databases.

Outcomes

A student:

5.2.3 critically analyses decision-making processes in a range of information and software solutions

5.3.1 justifies responsible practices and ethical use of information and software technology

5.3.2 acquires and manipulates data and information in an ethical manner.

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • use research to define selected terms
  • identify relevant issues to consider when designing a database for a doctor's surgery
  • analyse a variety of data privacy policies to identify their important features
  • design a data privacy policy for a doctor's surgery that reflects responsible practice and ethical use of information technology
  • plan and justify the fields, software and backup strategy required for a doctor's surgery database.
