Description of activity

Students develop a project to plan and produce graphical presentations for a product of their choice focusing on Product Illustration. They are required to include in the project:

  • idea development folio of freehand sketches
  • CAD model of the object
  • orthogonal drawing showing assembled object, including sectioned view
  • exploded pictorial view of the product (pencil drawing and hand-coloured view)
  • partial sectional view of the product (either CAD or hand drawn)
  • PowerPoint multimedia presentation of the model and coffee mug.

Context

Students are undertaking the Product Illustration option module. They have prior knowledge and understanding of graphic principles and techniques, and have had a range of experiences in designing and producing graphical presentations. Students have learnt about graphic design principles and techniques.

Outcomes

A student:

5.1.1 communicates ideas graphically using freehand sketching and accurate drafting techniques

5.1.2 analyses the nature of information and intended audience to select and develop appropriate presentations

5.2.1 designs and produces a range of graphical presentations

5.3.1 identifies, interprets, selects and applies graphics conventions, standards and procedures in graphical communications

5.4.1 manipulates and produces images using computer-based drafting and presentation technologies

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • use a wide range of techniques to develop freehand sketches and drawings
  • select and develop a range of appropriate graphical presentations
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the features of effective graphical presentations
  • demonstrate knowledge of graphic standards, procedures and conventions for the production of a range of graphical presentations
  • demonstrate time management skills in the development of the graphical presentation
  • demonstrate proficiency in the use of a CAD program to develop project work.
