Winter Weeds of Crops and Pastures
End of Stage 5 (end of Year 10)
Description of activity
Students identify six different weeds that are/or could be a problem in crops and two different weeds that are/or could be a problem in spring pasture hay in the Riverina/NE Victoria.
For each weed students:
- identify the common name(s) and scientific name of each plant
- describe in detail the damage and/or losses this weed may cause
- outline the way the weed is spread
- discuss in detail the management practices that a farmer could use to prevent the weed from coming onto the farm and spreading
- discuss in detail the management practices that a farmer could use to control the weed, once it is on the farm.
Context
In the unit “Winter Cereal Production”, students have been introduced to the management and control of significant pests and diseases. This unit builds on students’ knowledge of agriculture and production systems, plant reproduction and seed dispersal.

Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- collect information from a range of secondary sources
- identify and research the weeds that are pests of crops, pastures and hay
- analyse and discuss the relevant information and apply to management practices.
