Description of Activity

As part of their study and practical experience in the agricultural enterprise of beekeeping, students produce a yearly calendar of the activities of an apiarist. They explain each activity and why it is carried out at that particular time of year.

Context

Students have been introduced to the management of bees as an agricultural enterprise. They have identified and discussed the activities of an apiarist. This unit builds on students’ knowledge of agriculture and production systems. As part of this unit relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, regulations and standards, including OHS and animal welfare guidelines have been studied and complied with. Appropriate notification, certification, permission, permits and licences have been applied for and granted.

Outcomes

A student:
5.3.4 explains and evaluates the impact of management decisions on animal production enterprises
5.6.2 performs plant and animal management practices safely and in cooperation with others

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • research and explain the activities carried out by apiarists
  • place the activities in the correct season on a calendar
  • analyse and explain the timing of each activity.
