The following strands are covered in this activity:

Working Mathematically, Space and Geometry

Description of activity

Students make a picture using different-sized paper shapes, including circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. They glue their picture onto paper and add additional features. Students name the shapes that they have used in their pictures and describe how they have been used.

The suggested time for this activity is 30 minutes.

Suggested materials

Blank paper, different-sized paper shapes, glue
Optional: computer drawing program

Prior learning

Students have sorted two-dimensional shapes according to features including size and shape. They have made pictures using attribute blocks and other concrete materials.

  • make a picture using a selection of shapes
  • name two-dimensional shapes
  • describe how different shapes have been used to make a picture
