Shannon has demonstrated an adequate awareness of the features of a recount. Past tense has been used and words indicating who, what, where and when have been included. Events have been sequenced and descriptive language has been used. There is good directionality, and letter formation is correct. Simple sentences have been created but the use of full stops and capital letters is inconsistent. Different strategies, such as copying words and sounding out, have been used to spell words. An attempt at self-correction has been made. To develop further, Shannon should work on punctuation, include more sequencing vocabulary and give a personal opinion of the experience. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing above the expected standard midway through Kindergarten.

Students write with an increasing awareness of the nature, purpose and conventions of written language. They produce simple texts that demonstrate an awareness of the basic grammar and punctuation needed. Students know and use letters and sounds of the alphabet to attempt to spell known words and use most lower and upper case letters appropriately to construct sentences. Students explore the use of computer technology to construct texts.
