K-6 Linkages

What is the K-6 linkages project about?

Linkages is an ongoing curriculum project aimed at identifying related content and outcomes across the six key learning areas as K-6 syllabuses are developed.

Linkages material provides teachers with examples of where curriculum connections can be located across two or more key learning areas. It addresses curriculum integration issues drawing on the latest research, includes advice on generic outcomes and gives insight into teachers' approaches to curriculum integration, using student work samples and teacher-devised units of work.

The Linkages project has been developed for the following six purposes:

  • To provide accurate information about curriculum integration, based on current research.
  • To assist teachers' planning by identifying authentic links across K-6 syllabuses while ensuring that the distinctive aspects of each key learning area are recognised.
  • To enhance teaching and learning by supporting teachers in their use of Board of Studies syllabuses.
  • To present examples of exemplary practice in the area of curriculum integration through selected case studies.
  • To demonstrate how student work samples can indicate achievement in relation to knowledge, skills, and values and attitudes in more than one key learning area.
  • To provide primary teachers with advice regarding generic outcomes, particularly in relation to syllabus outcomes.

View the following multi-stage units of work developed through the K-6 linkages curriculum project:

Perseverance
An S2 and S3 unit – 'Perseverance' provides opportunities for students in Stages 2 and 3 to look at the notion of what is it to persevere. It explores the concepts of believing in oneself, personal traits, setting realistic goals, discrimination and social justice.

Leaving - Saying goodbye and reuniting
An ES1, S1, S2, and S3 unit – 'Leaving' is a literacy-based unit. It provides opportunities for student to discuss the issue of leaving in a variety of contexts. The text 'Leaving' is used as the vehicle for the discussions. The concept of something of yourself remaining when you leave a place or community is central to the unit. It explores the concept of leaving and the customs and traditions different cultures have when saying goodbye.

Patterns and Shapes
An ES1, S1, S2 and S3 unit – 'Patterns and Shapes' provides opportunities for students to explore patterns and shapes in the environment. It integrates Space and Geometry, Patterns and Algebra and Working Mathematically strands with English, PDHPE and Creative Arts. It encourages the use of a range of information and communication technologies (ICT). It is possible for the unit to be taught as a whole or for one or two learning sequences to be taught separately.
