Guidelines for marking

The following guidelines for marking show one approach to assigning a value to a student’s work. Other approaches may be used that better suit the reporting process of the school. Categories, marks, grades, visual representations or individual comments/notations may all be useful.

Range
A student in this range:
A
  • recognises that bullying and harassment can take various forms. These should include verbal, social, psychological and emotional.
  • describes a range of reasons why bullying and harassment is occurring. These should include jealousy, feeling threatened and the need for attention.
  • explains the effects of bullying and harassment. These should demonstrate an understanding of the range of social and emotional effects.
  • explains how the situation can be managed. These should include a range of strategies that reflect sound problem-solving skills.
B
  • recognises that bullying and harassment can take more than one form.
  • describes some reasons why bullying and harassment are occurring.
  • explains some effects of bullying and harassment.
  • explains some basic strategies to manage the situation.
C
  • recognises a form of bullying and harassment.
  • identifies a reason why bullying and harassment is occurring.
  • identifies an effect of bullying and harassment.
  • identifies an appropriate action for the situation.
D
  • shows an elementary understanding of bullying and harassment and may require some teacher support to complete the Activity.

Feedback

Students are provided with written comments from the teacher that inform them on how well their responses show an understanding of the different forms of bullying and harassment, the reasons it may occur, the effect it can have on the victim and how it can be effectively managed.

Future directions

Following this Activity students study the protective strategies that can be used to effectively manage personal safety, including ‘trust, talk and take control’. They also explore ways in which they can help others who are being bullied or harassed. Study in Stage 5 further develops students’ understanding of power in relationships as they explore broader contexts in which abuse may occur including the workplace, date violence and sexual harassment.
