Chris’s composition reflects a clear understanding of the features of Medieval music. Canon, mode, inversion and repeated pattern are effectively used in a well-balanced piece with two distinct sections. There is a solid sense or rhythm and metre, and the melodic ideas are varied and well extended. Textural manipulation has been used to sustain interest and provide structural contrasts. The percussive element has been well placed and adds to the authenticity of the Medieval style. The performance is cohesive and technically secure, demonstrating successful ensemble skills such as timing. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.
